A landmark of its own, downtown McCook is
lined with striking architectural designs. Each building is
rich in its own history, providing an enjoyable atmosphere
reminiscent of the times in which McCook experienced it’s
booming growth. Stroll along the historical brick streets and
enjoy personal hometown service from the specialty shops that
fill the downtown area.
Green Dream House
The Green Dream House was the National Grand Prize for
American Recycles Day 2001. Judith Mahoney of McCook won
the prize valued at approximately $200,000. The 1,600
square-foot, 3 bedroom home was constructed using
recycled-content building materials and energy efficient
equipment and was designed to complement the architectural
diversity and historical nature of its McCook, Nebraska
neighborhood.
McCook Army Air Base
The
McCook Army Air Base, activated April 1, 1943, was one of
eleven Army Air Force training bases in Nebraska during World
War II. The base was under the command of the 2nd Air Force
Headquarters, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and provided final
training of heavy bomber crews for the B-17. The base is located just north of McCook off Hwy 83. For more

McCook's Oldest Church
The
First Congregational Church, located at 212 East E Street, is
the oldest church in McCook.
Governor Frank Morrison Home
Frank W. Hoyt and his wife, Hazel, lived in this home located
at 105 East H Street from 1931 to 1997. In 1997 Biff Morrison
purchased the home for his parents, former Nebraska Governor
Frank B. Morrison and Maxine. He wanted his father to be able
to work on writing his memoirs in McCook, where they had lived
and worked for so many years.
Former Governor Morrison had his office at 301 Norris Avenue
in what is now known as the Morrison Building.
The Museum Of The High Plains
The
Museum of the High Plains, located at 413 Norris Avenue,
features authentic pioneer artifacts from the 1870’s, a
Railroad Room, a Daughters of the American Revolution room and
other turn of the century displays. A Political Room salutes
Senator George W. Norris and the three Governors from
McCook…Frank Morrison, Ralph Brooks and Ben Nelson. The museum
has an extensive collection of historic photographs and other

Governor Ben Nelson Boyhood Home
The Ben Nelson House, 608 Norris Avenue, moved from its
original location at 609 B Street in 2000, to be a part of the
Heritage Square honoring McCook’s legacy of hometown heroes
and historic architecture. Ben grew up in this house, the only
child of Ben and Birdella Nelson. He became a success in the
business world, moved into politics and served two terms as
Nebraska’s Governor before being elected in 2000 to represent
Nebraska in the United States Senate.
Senator George W. Norris Home
The
George Norris Home has been restored as a state and national
historic site. Built in 1886, 706 Norris Avenue was home to
Senator George W. Norris (1861-1944).
Senator Norris was one of the great independent politicians
of American public life. He served his first ten years in
Congress after being elected to the United States House of
Representatives as a Republican in 1902. In 1912, Norris was
elected a U.S. Senator from Nebraska and served another thirty
years devoting much of his time to developing public ownership
of utilities. Senator Norris helped author the
Nebraska constitutional amendment that established a
unicameral legislature in 1935. He was acclaimed by the U.S.
Senate as the "greatest senator in American history".

Frank Lloyd Wright House
One
of America’s most influential and imaginative architects,
Frank Lloyd Wright spent almost 70 years creating a striking
variety of architectural forms. It is one of the few homes
west of the Mississippi River designed by this internationally
famous man. The Sutton House is an example of Wright’s prairie
style, in which he blended the structure with it’s natural
surroundings. This fabulous home located at 602 Norris Avenue is a private
residence but may be viewed from Norris Avenue and West F
Street.
