Although the rain was a welcome guest over the
weekend, organizers of the 2006 Nebraska State Fly-In were quietly
disappointed that it’s timing adversely affected the activities
planned. Thunderstorms and heavy, intermittent rains precluded
several airplanes from arriving as planned on the evening of
Friday, June16, however, a good number of pilots were able to get
here before the storm. Fortunately, the air show and formation
flying pilots were able to perform as scheduled. The daring
acrobatics of the air show kept the spectators in awe and the
skill of the Colorado Yak Pak pilots, as they flew in various
formations, garnered their respect. Children were thrilled by an
unexpected treat when local pilots gave free airplane rides. It
was a fun and, at the same time, educational weekend complete with
great food made available by Schmick’s Market, Subway Sandwiches &
Salads, Culpeppers BBQ and the Kiwanis Club.
. . . all those committee members who helped
organize the 2006 Nebraska State Fly-In on June 16, 17 & 18 in
McCook. This was a monumental task that took a great deal of
planning and organization! Congratulations on a job well done! An
extra note of appreciation for the sponsors of the Fly-In who made
the weekend possible.
. . . the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival
Committee. Once again the Festival was a huge success! The quality
of musicians and storytellers continues to be top-notch.
Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the event drew even more
attendance and participation than in previous years. Thanks to the
committee’s vision and perseverance over these 10 years of growth,
McCook can be proud to be the host community for one of the
premier events in Nebraska.
. . . all the businesses and organizations that
answered our call for letters of support to send with our
application to host the 2007 Nebraska Chautauqua. In a matter of
only 5-6 days, we received 40 letters that enthusiastically voiced
support ranging from financial to in-kind donations. Without that
type of positive response, our application would not stand up
against other communities that also applied. Thank you, Thank you!
The Nebraska Humanities Council expects to announce the host
community by August 1, 2006.
Happy 125th Birthday
McCook!
Now is the time to add to your vocabulary bank,
not to mention your spelling prowess! Try “Quasquicentennial”! The
McCook Area Chamber of Commerce called a meeting of business and
organization leaders, as well as the general public, to initiate
plans for celebrating McCook’s 125th Birthday in 2007. Energy and
ideas burst from the twenty-five representatives who met on June 6
at the McCook National Bank meeting room. The primary discussion
centered around the decision to apply to be the host for the 2007
Nebraska Chautauqua. (Another spelling challenge!) In order to
meet the pending application deadline, a steering committee was
formed. Those who volunteered to serve include: Dr. Richard Tubbs
(McCook Community College), Leigh Ann Miller (Linda Maiden’s State
Farm Insurance Agency), Denise Ringenberg (MEDC), Duane Tappe
(Curator of George Norris State Historical Site), and Pam Harsh
(Chamber of Commerce). The Committee was successful in completing
the application and collecting 40 letters of support prior to the
deadline of June 15, which was a mere nine days later. The Chamber
of Commerce is now awaiting news of the host community selection
as determined by the Nebraska Humanities Council. That
announcement should be made by August 1. The next meeting for the
125th Birthday Celebration is scheduled for July 11, 1:00 p.m., at
the McCook National Bank meeting room. We encourage everyone in
the McCook area to attend the meeting and get involved in this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! If you have questions and/or
suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact the Chamber at
308-345-3200 or

Lied Main Street/MEDC/McCook
Area Chamber Partnership
A task force has been established to address the
possibility of combining efforts of the McCook Area Chamber of
Commerce and the McCook Economic Development Corporation to bring
the Lied Main Street Program back to McCook. Three committee
members representing each group volunteered to investigate this
opportunity to determine how the relationship would be structured.
Members of the committee include: Mark Graff, Steve Leopold, Don
Moore, Aaron Kircher, Bill Longnecker, Terri Shipshock, Kristin
Stagemeyer, Jim Ulrich and Betty Kenner. If you wish to share your
ideas on this effort, please feel free to contact any of the
committee members, the Chamber office, the MEDC office or Tor
Olson.
