August Rush Sponsored by Chamber
dEAf PEdESTRIANS

And the crowd goes
WILD!
August Rush was successfully kicked off with the
Battle of the Bands competition sponsored by the McCook Area
Chamber of Commerce on Friday, August 8. Threat of rain moved
the Battle of the Bands inside at the City Auditorium but,
nevertheless, the August Rush Committee was pleased with the
turn-out of 200 people. Three area bands took the stage vying
for the opportunity to play as the Opening Act for the second
half of August Rush at the concert on August 23. Bands were
evaluated by a panel of five judges and a pre-determined scoring
system with points awarded in the following areas: Stage
Presence, Audience Response, Overall Sound, Music Genre and
Lyrics. It was a very close competition with a local group known
as Black Tie Affair receiving the high score.
In the second half of August Rush, a nationally
known band, dEAf PEdESTRIANS, out of Dallas, Texas played at the
City Auditorium on Saturday, August 23. The dEAf PEdESTRIANS
have two hit songs, with CDs marketed through Target stores.
Their music is also available on iTunes. dEAf PEdESTRIANS
concerts have sold out numerous times in Kearney and Grand
Island and proved to be popular in the McCook area as well. The
concert was attended by over 300 young people.
August Rush sponsors included the following:
Rock Star Level - City of McCook, Community Hospital,
Hometown Family Radio and the Red Willow County Visitor’s
Committee; Opening Act Level - Great Plains

37th Annual Heritage Days on the Horizon
The 37th Annual Heritage Days Celebration
scheduled for September 27 & 28 is fast approaching. The
celebration will be kicked off with the mixer at McCook National
Bank on Wednesday, September 24 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Royalty
and other Honorees will be announced during the event. Thursday
evening, September 25, will be Art in the Park and “DEAL OR NO
DEAL” which is a fundraiser that will help the Chamber defray
costs of facilitating Heritage Days. “Deal or No Deal” will be a
fun activity wherein participants will have the chance to play
the game fashioned after the popular television game show.
Contestants will have the opportunity to win up to $500.00 in
each of the four games played. If you cannot be present that
evening, you still have the opportunity to win $100.00 in
Chamber Gift Certificates. Tickets are available at the Chamber
office for $1 or six for $5.
Friday morning is the annual Norris Foundation
Prayer Breakfast to be held at the Heritage Senior Center
beginning at 7:00 a.m. The McCook High School Bison play a home
game on Friday evening at Weiland Field. Saturday begins two
days of celebration starting off with the Barnett Park Car Show
at 9:00 a.m. and the parade at 10:00 a.m. The theme for this
year’s parade is “Did We Do That?” That theme should provide
participants with a lot of different ideas for a fun entry.
Parade entry deadline is September 19. As always, there will be
lots of Arts & Crafts in Norris Park, as well as, entertainment
in the bandshell throughout the day. Saturday evening, the
Chamber is hosting a “tailgate party” and BBQ sponsored by
Schmick’s Market and Parker Hannifin. VK Electronics is planning
to set up big screen televisions to watch football games at the
park. We are hopeful that the Virginia Tech/Nebraska game will
be featured that evening. The Homespun Fun BBQ contest will also
take place on Saturday. D & S Hardware is again providing the
grand prize for the winner of the contest. The Fox Theatre also
has plans for a show that evening! Sunday morning church in
Norris Park will be followed by more delicious food, vendor
booths and bandshell entertainment.
Mark your calendar to attend Heritage Days this
year...the days are packed with fun from beginning to end! A
more detailed schedule will be distributed around town this week
so be watching for it. We will also send it out electronically
for your convenience.
Barbeque Plans made for Heritage Days
Parker Hannifin and Schmick’s Market are
partnering with the Chamber to sponsor a barbeque for the
general public in addition to the 3rd Annual Backyard BBQ
contest. All of these activities will be held on Saturday,
September 27, in Norris Park. A team
application is included in this newsletter and BBQ Contest
rules are available from the Chamber. Schmick’s Market will
provide two ribeye steaks for each team to prepare for judging.
The grand prize, provided by D & S Hardware, is a Weber Grill
valued at $400 plus $100 in cash. Second place will take $125
home and third place will win $75. Prize money is provided by
Parker Hannifin. Steaks will be distributed at 1:00 p.m. and
must be turned in for judging between 5:00 and 5:30. The public
BBQ feed in Norris Park will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at
7:30 p.m.
Get in on this great opportunity by sending the
Chamber your application and $20 registration fee no later than
September 15. Included with your team registration is a
